THE BRAVE CAT (MEXICO) |

Context: These short
films made by Mexican kids are the result of 8 work sessions. The
children made a collective proposal for a story. Then, they were
guided by an animation director who directed the workshop and explained
about animation. The children worked together on the storyboard
and created, using clay, the main chractors, the scenery and the
props and shot the film frame by frame. Postproduction was done
by adults, but some of the children were involved in the process.

| BEST FILM ANIMATION 13 – 16: GROWING
UP (ARGENTINA) |

Context: Work done by kids
from script to sound and editing. Adult coordinators supervised
and / or guided children's work at startup and followed the process.
Kids work independently and supervision is only intended to avoid
technical failure or other problems. This film is part of a project
carried out in public schools by kids that have never been trained
in filmmaking or animation.

| BEST FILM LIVE ACTION 6 – 12: WE ARE (INDIA) |

Context: The film is made by
children of the Destitute Children's Home of CCD. It is the visual
representation of their imagination and concern about nature, flora
and fauna facing destruction in the hands of humans. Adults played
a facilitating role in terms of framing their thoughts and enabling
them to document the script sequentially.

Jury's comment: This film has a strong message:
we should protect forests and wild life, and the actors were well

| BEST FILM LIVE ACTION 13 – 16: OLD PIKEY (SWEDEN) |

Context: Old Pikey was done
without any adult’s
initiative. The only involvement of an adult is the leading role
as the fisherman. It’s made totally by Marcus Hagwall and
Jonatan Fjellström. They were also able to borrow equipment
from their local film-pool, which aims to give filmmakers
the opportunity to make films of good quality. The film was made
very quickly with only about 3-4 days of shooting. Marcus Hagwall
wrote the script earlier this year.

Context: Two boys make chalk
paintings on the ground on a sunny day. Soon a washing car drives
in, but the boys go on drawing. One of them even brings his mother's
umbrella to protect themselves from water. The driver has to let
the kids do their chalk painting. This film was created as part
of the Youth and Peace festival.

Context: Tvibit Filmhouse works
with young people on a learning-by-doing-method. When producing
films with young people, we focus on their ideas and help them
develop them into a screenplay ready for production. Eilif Bremer
Landsend developed the idea and a first version of the film at
a Tvibit film workshop. The director and his young crew made the
final version with the help of Joachim Lyng, Tvibit's adult film
consult.

THE SUN MIGHT SHINE TOMORROW (SWEDEN)

Context: Mikael Bundsen and Wille Lindelöw
made the film with a budget of around five dollars and a lot of
enthusiasm, energy and strong will. Even though Mikael broke his
foot and the fact that they had to reshoot most of the scenes due
to the snowy weather and getting in trouble with their parents
in the meantime did not stop them. It's not easy to be a teenage
filmmaker. No adults were involved in the production.

Context: Gudrun and her cat
go fishing at the Seljord Lake during the winter. Under the ice,
some odd creatures are waiting. Amongst them the huge and dangerous
Seljord monster. The film was made by the pupils in class, with
some instructions from their teacher.

Jury's comment: This film bubbles with creativity
and humor. The filmmakers show that they really enjoy storytelling.
The jury finds this film a genuine children’s story, where
their influence upon a result is total – both when it comes
to the expressive animated characters and the narrative.

| BEST FILM ANIMATION 13 – 16: SUPER PIG KNORRE (BELGIUM) |

Context: Kidscam, an organization
supported by the Flemish government, which helps youngsters make
film and specializes in one-day workshops. It makes children go
through the entire filmmaking process in that short period of time.
The film was entirely made by the youngsters themselves. A superhero-pig
takes revenge on people having a barbecue.

comment: The prize goes to an incredibly
funny and original film. It had great music and a brilliant energy,

Joseph Procopio's filmmaking debut. He was writer, director, lead
actor, narrator, and assistant editor.

story with originality and humor. The filmmaker opens his door

is a non-profit youth film training organization founded in 1991.
The film was written, directed and edited, etc. by young people.
Two adult supervisors oversaw the production.

category to judge, as the standard was so high in all the films.

Context: Club-Studio Ecoanima
encourages young people to discussed, in their own language and
through animation, social problems such as spiritual decline, contempt
for ecological knowledge and social inertness. More than 50 animated
films were created by pupils between 1994 and 2004.

Contact Person: Yuri Krasny Jury's comment: This film is
more than a mouthful of creative ideas. The filmmakers demonstrate
that they know what animation is really about: making dead things
come alive. The twist and turns of the story is being underlined
by suitable selections of music and sounds. As viewers we completely
forget the origin of the characters. |
THE S.O.F.I.A. FOUNDATION PRIZE FOR MOST PROMISING YOUNG FILM
MAKER:
The S.O.F.I.A. Foundation Prize goes to a young person who has shown exceptional
sophistication in this festival. He has shown an appreciation of the beauty
of film and an understanding of the power of stillness. He has shown that
he has the initiative to really stretch the boundaries of young filmmaking.
We think he has a very promising future in the world of film…
And the prize goes to Marcus Hagwall, from Sweden (Old Pikey).

Context: Based on the story Le Bâton de la
Nature by 9 years old Pierre Delcommune. The Great Adurié loves
and protects all animals. One day, a terrible war starts between monkeys
and lions. Adurié decides to do whatever is in his power to reconcile
them...
