BEST FILM ANIMATION 6 – 12: Why Cows Don’t Fly (Mexico)

Context: These short films made by Mexican kids are the result of 8 work sessions. The children made a collective proposal for a story. Then, they were guided by an animation director who directed the workshop and explained about animation. The children worked together on the storyboard and created, using clay, the main chractors, the scenery and the props and shot the film frame by frame. Postproduction was done by adults, but some of the children were involved in the process.

Context: During a week 4 teenagers worked on this film, which was designed as a statement against racism. It was their first experience with animation... they loved it!

Context: Joseph, Susan & Katherine Procopio were writers, directors, actor/actresses, and assistant editors. Synopsis: With the help of three friends, a lost toad finds out where he belongs.

Context: FISH was produced by students in Station Next’s Filmvæksthus – a film school for young people. Here the students are taught the basics of filmmaking, in conditions very similar to those in the world of sports. Professional filmmakers) coach our students, but the students make their own films from the birth of the idea to the arrangement of the premiere.

Context: Do Pecuniam was produced for a school competition, about ‘old languages’. The kids came up with the idea and turned it into a film. The adults of Jugendfilm only gave technical support and let the kids share in their know-how.

GRAND PRIZE FOR OUTSTANDING FILM 6 - 12:
Today Starts (Japan)

Context:The workshop was held during five days in spring of 2006. Five girls studied the principles and techniques of animation. They challenged the animation using sand. The beautiful work was created using light from under the sand.

Context:The film was made in cut-out and objects animation techniques and was produced in an animation film workshop - Dzieciêca Wytwórnia Filmowa (DWF) / Children's Film Factory, which exist since 1985 and has operated in Entropia Gallery in Wroclaw. In this workshop, adults are involved only in teaching how to use the camera, build camera stands, using equipment and computer programmes.
